Giving an Answer For Our Hope

We all hope in something whether it is a person or a thing. Whom or what do you put your hope in? What answer could you give as to the reason for your hope?

Let's take a look at the definition of the word Apologetics. When most people hear that word, they typically think of the modern use of apology. Therefore, making the conclusion that the Christian faith is to say we are sorry for our faith. However, the word apologetics derives from the Greek word apologia, which means "to give an answer" or "to make a defense". Apologetics is not an apology. It's an answer — a defense of what we believe. In Peter's first epistle, he writes, "In your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect" (1 Peter 3:15). As a Christian, are you ready to explain not only what you believe but why you believe it?  We are called to think according to the Word of God, to seek the mind of Christ and an understanding of the things set forth in sacred Scripture. God calls us to be ready to make a defense for the hope that is in us, but notice that He calls us to do it with gentleness and respect. Apologetics are for all Christians. We must all know what we believe, why we believe, how to live it, how to defend it, and how to proclaim it with gentleness and respect.

Lord, thank you for giving us the reason for our hope. It is in you that we have true eternal hope. Thank you for sending your Son. Without you we are lost. Help us to speak the truth in love to those that may ask of the hope we have within us. It is in Jesus name I pray. Amen.
