Good Friday

Jesus is tried and crucified. Late in the afternoon, His body is removed from the cross and placed in the tomb.

This day was a decisive turning point for all of humanity. Paul considered it to be "of first importance" that Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and was raised to life on the third day, (1 Corinthians 15:3-6)

On Good Friday we remember the day Jesus willingly suffered and died by crucifixion as ultimate sacrifice for our sins. Jesus willingly chose to suffer and die for all humanity. "I lay down my life that I may take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father." (John 10 17-18) Jesus would willingly be mocked and scourged for our sin. "His appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance, and his form beyond that of the children of mankind." (Isaiah 52:14) He himself "was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed." (Isaiah 53:5) He had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth, yet it was the will of the LORD to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes offering for guilt. (Isaiah 53: 9-10)

Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!" and having said this he breathed his last. Luke 23:46) Jesus took our sin upon himself and willingly died for you and for me. And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!" (Mark 15:39)

Jesus was placed in the tomb. Now there was a man named Joseph, from the Jewish town of Arimathea. He was a member of the council, a good and righteous man, who had not consented to their decision and action; and he was looking for the kingdom of God. This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then he took it down and wrapped it in a linen shroud and laid him in a tomb cut in stone, where no one had ever yet been laid. It was the day of Preparation, and the Sabbath was beginning.  The women who had come with him from Galilee followed  and saw the tomb and how his body was laid. Then they returned and prepared spices and ointments. On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment. (Luke 23: 50-56)

And he rolled a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away. (Matthew 27:60)
