God is Light

If We Walk in the Light

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us (I John 1:5-8).

To counter the false teachers who denied the existence or importance of sin, John affirms its reality, This affirmation of sin's reality constitutes the second test of true fellowship. Those who deny the reality of sin demonstrate their lack of genuine salvation. The first test, the affirmation of a proper view of Christ (vv. 1-4).

The message that John and the other apostles preached came from God, not from men (v5). The heretics claimed to be the truly enlightened, walking in the real light, but John denied that because they do not recognize their sin. John forcefully affirms that God is absolutely perfect and nothing exists in God's character that impringes upon his truth and holiness.

Lord, I come to you with a humble heart. Thank you for opening our eyes to Your Word. It is by You that we have wisdom and by you we have faith in the Son of God who loved us and gave himself for us. Please forgive us when we sin and fall short of your grace, For we have all sinned. If we say we have no sin the light is not in us. May we keep Your Word in our hearts so that we do not sin against you. May our prayer be pleasing to you. May all who do not know you as Lord and Savior come to you today and acknowledge their sin and accept forgiveness. May our eyes be opened so that we may behold wonderful things from Your law. For You are the Word of Life. You are our advocate who has taken away the sins of the world by your death and resurrection. It is by your stripes we have been healed. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
