God is my helper and upholder of my life (Psalm 54:4). Whatever I may be going through, whatever you may be going through, God the Creator of the universe and all that is in it, is with us. He is our shield, our protector, and sustainer of life. It is in God I trust and whose word I praise (Psalms 56:10-11).
David, who would be king, knew full well where his help came from. His help came from the LORD. For he had seen God work on his behalf before. Even though he had recently rescued an Israelite border town from the Philistines, he was still considered a traitor to King Saul. Saul would seek after his life. David put his trust in God. He put his trust in the word of God and gave him praise even though he was being sought after.
The events in the Bible took place many centuries ago. However, this Psalm provides encouragement to any believer who may be going through the difficulties of life. God is our helper and upholder of our life. Therefore, we can take courage and put our trust in him.
Lord, I come to you with praise on my lips and a heart that is humble. I thank you for being my shield and my protector. I thank you for being the one who upholds my life and my trust is in you. May my worship be pleasing to you. Thank you for your faithfulness. Thank you for your word. Thank you for Jesus Christ who redeemed my soul from the pit of hell. My soul is overwhelmed by your mercies poured out on this sinner saved by grace. May all that I do today point to the one who saved me for the wrath of God. It is in his name, in the name of Jesus Christ my Lord and Savior I pray, amen.
