When the Right Question Can Be Powerful

Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her." Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there (John 8:6B-9). Then Jesus straightened up and asked her where her accusers where. When no one was left Jesus said, "Then neither do I condemn you," he declared. Go now and leave your life of sin." (vs. 10-11).

What made the men standing around, the elder and then the younger, drop their stones and walk away? We aren't certain. The Scriptures never tell us. Possibly, it was what Jesus spoke, "let any one of you without sin", that caused them to walk away.

What we can be certain of is this, for Scripture tells us: There is therefore no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1) For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death (v.2).

This same Jesus that forgave the woman caught in adultery is the same Jesus that offers forgiveness and grace to you and I. Let us walk away from sin and turn to Him for forgiveness. Let us draw near to God and he will draw near to you (James 4:8).

Lord, I come to you with a humble heart. Thank you for your forgiveness. Thank you for opening my eyes to the need of saving grace. I could not even know of your wondrous works had you not called me. Had you not worked in my life and brought me low. My soul is humbled and overwhelmed by your goodness. It is your righteousness that covers me and you know my name. May all that I do reflect Jesus Christ. May all that I do point to you and your mighty work in my life. Thank you for giving yourself for me. Thank you for your mercies that are new every morning. I pray for those who may not know you or have made you Savior and Lord of their lives. May they come to you today while it is still today. I pray that they open their eyes so that they may see your wondrous works. You are waiting and knocking on their hearts door. It is in Jesus precious name I pray, amen.
