Responding to God's Word

As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest good heart, and bear fruit with patience (Luke 8:4-15).

Jesus would often use the realities of everyday life to communicate spiritual truths. And it is our Lord's frequent teaching in parables that leads us to our passage for our devotion today.. Our passage reminds us that the state of the heart determines whether the Word will be received. It is only God that can make the hearts of sinners into good soil. Our prayer should be that he will do that in those with whom we share the gospel.

Let us remember to make continual effort to regularly exposing ourselves to the Word. We should read the Scriptures for ourselves and gather in the assembly with other believers to hear the message preached. The Word cannot take root if we are not continually learning, meditating on, and listening to it being taught.

Some seed falls on good soil and bears much fruit. Which type soil are you? Are you the type soil that hearing the Word you hold fast, You grasp the Word and never let it go allowing the Word to regenerate our hearts and bringing to full harvest with patients a faith that is obedient enduring to the end. Or are we those that only endure for a while and when life gets hard we walk away from God? Or still yet, those who chose not to believe at all?

Jesus' point in our passage today is that people respond differently based on the receptiveness of our hearts, and only God can make our hearts good soil for the gospel.

LORD, I come to you with a humble heart. Please forgive us were we have sinned and fallen short of your glory. I thank you for the spiritual truths you show us when we stay in Your Word. May we take the Scriptures and learn Your ways. May we hid it in our hearts so that we do not sin against you. Give us the wisdom we need to share the gospel with those around us. Give us Your strength to endure what this life may bring. For we know that you said we will have tribulation, but be of good cheer You have overcome the world. Christ Jesus our LORD and Savior has made us more than conquers. It is in Jesus precious name I pray, amen.
