Words Fitly Spoken

Aphorisms — short memorable words of wisdom. Proverbs 25:11 tells us, "A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver."

Communication is possible because we are made in the image of God. However, it is never neutral. As children we have perhaps heard this aphorism: "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me". These words are spoken out of the need to protect ourselves from insults of others. How very misleading this statement is. Our wounds heal fairly quickly when physical, but wounds that come from the mouths of others hurt deeply and can linger.

We have been saved by the "word of life" that brought us to Salvation through Jesus Christ; therefore, Christians ought speak words of life even in the most challenging of situations. We are to speak truthfully and lovingly instead of choosing words of destruction toward others.
Lord, I come to you with a humble heart. I come to you seeking wisdom and truth. It is there in the pages of Scripture that I can find wise counsel for your words are life. May the words of my mouth spoken to others come life and not death. Love and not hatred. Forgive me when I sin and fall short of your glory. Forgive me for words spoken unlovingly. We have all fallen short for there is none righteous. May all that I do in action and word reflect your grace. Thank you for your mercies that are new each morning. Thank you for Jesus Christ my Lord and Savior. It is in Jesus name I pray, amen.
