In Luke 8:16-18, Our Savior continues to teach on the word of God and the proper response to it. The parable of the sower focused on why some people respond and others reject the Word. However, in this passage Jesus addresses more what the right reception of the Word looks like.
Be careful how we hear, since more will be given to the one who has, and those who have not will lose even what they have (Luke 8:18). Jesus means that those who hear and believe will receive even more truth from God, but those who hear and reject the Word will lose what little truth they have access to.
We cannot take for granted that God's Word will always be available to us. If we do not believe on Christ today, our heart will be hardened, and there is no guarantee that an opportunity will come again in the future. Believing God's Word is always our most urgent task, and if we trust Scripture, God will give us more understanding of it. If we disbelieve Him, we may lose what understanding we have. Ones response to the light in this life is crucial, because at the throne of judgement there will be no opportunity to embrace truth that was formerly spurned (Rev. 20: 11-15). Those who scorn the light of the gospel now will have all light removed from them in eternity (Luke 19:26 and Matt. 25:29).
Let us then, be careful how we hear and respond to God's Word in our life. Then, go out and spread the gospel for that is what Jesus Christ called us to do, "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. and behold, I am with you always to the end of the age" (Matt 28: 16-20).
LORD, I come to you with a humble and contrite heart. Thank you for the wisdom we need through Scripture. Thank you for showing us the urgency in listening to your call on our life. We must respond today while we have the light of life here with us. Thank you for Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior who came into this world to give us life eternal. Life and not death. May all that we do today point to you. May all that hear your word and read your word respond to your calling on their life today for tomorrow is not promised.. Today is the day to listen and obey. May our prayer be pleasing to you. May it be a sweet aroma lifted to you in worship. Thank you for listening to us. It is in Jesus name I pray, amen. .
